How long do rabbits live?
On average, domestic rabbits can live between 1 and 2 years 8 and 12 years oldreports Blue Cross. The oldest recorded domestic rabbit was born 18 years and 10 months oldaccording to PetMD.
Domestic rabbits generally live longer than their wild counterparts. Wild rabbits have an average lifespan of 1 to 2 yearsaccording to the Blue Cross. Their lifespans are shorter due to environmental impacts such as predators, access to food and a lack of safe conditions.
Other factors that contribute to how long rabbits include breed, genetics, gender and diet, reports Oxbow Animal Health.
The American Rabbit Breeders Association recognizes this 52 unique rabbit breeds. According to Oxbow Animal Health, smaller rabbit breeds tend to live longer than their larger relatives.
Unspayed female rabbits are also at a higher risk of developing uterine cancer, which can lead to a shorter lifespan, reports PetMD.
What are the stages of a rabbit’s life cycle?
There are three phases in the life of a rabbit: young, adult and senior.
Rabbits are considered juvenile up to 12 months of age when they grow up. Adulthood lasts up to 5 years old.
Once a rabbit is over 5 years old, it is considered a senior.
