MUMBAI: Khar police station arrested two members of a gang that cheats senior citizens and robs them of their jewellery. The latest robbery that led to their arrest last week was when they duped a 73-year-old woman last month and stole jewelry worth ₹1.31 lakh from her.

The two suspects, identified as 24-year-old Arjun Kale and 20-year-old Balaji Pawar, are residents of the street. A police officer said the suspects targeted those who could not run after them after the robbery: the elderly, women and the overweight.
On November 27, one of them approached the elderly person in Khar Danda district around 11:45 p.m. He told her that his employer celebrated the birth of his newborn child by donating money to poor people as charity. He took her to an adjacent alley and asked her to remove her jewelry so that she appeared poor in order to claim the money. She put her 2 tola gold chains, 1 tola gold earrings and half tola ear ornaments in her bag, and the suspect put them in his bag. They would then take the money away while their victims waited for them to return with the promised money.
According to police, the duo has registered more than 35 cases of cheating at various police stations in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune. Of these, five cases were registered at Khar police station.
Khar police booked them under sections 318 (cheating) and 3 (6) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested them on December 18. The two have been remanded in custody. They recovered a total of ₹4.54 lakh from the accused, of which ₹Valuables worth Rs 1.31 lakh were stolen from the senior citizen.
