Buckle up for a potentially bumpy ride as storms from coast to coast could inconvenience millions of travelers during this busy holiday weekend.
After a series of tornadoes and large hail, parts of the South are at risk for more tornadoes this weekend.
In the western mountains, a series of storms could bring 3 to 2 feet of snow and more than 4 inches of rain in some areas.
And parts of the East Coast could be inundated by heavy rain, potentially causing dangerous travel conditions.
According to FlightAware.com, more than 2,800 flights to, from or within the US were delayed on Friday. And many more flights could be delayed or canceled this weekend. Here’s more about what to expect in each region:
More tornadoes could hit the South
Eastern Louisiana, central Mississippi and western Alabama could be hit by large hail and some tornadoes on Saturday, CNN meteorologist Elisa Raffa said. The area includes Mississippi’s capital, Jackson.
“An active day of severe weather is expected Saturday through Saturday night, with severe storms likely from East Texas across the Lower Mississippi Valley and into parts of the Tennessee Valley,” the National Weather Service said. Storm Prediction Center said.
“Large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are likely, including possibly some strong (EF2+) tornadoes,” the SPC said. “At a minimum, a damaging wind/tornado threat will likely remain through late Saturday evening/early Sunday, including portions of the Alabama/Florida Panhandle, and possibly north into the Cumberland Plateau area.”
The storms could force flights to detour around hard-hit areas, causing drivers to postpone their road trips.
Parts of the South were still clearing some suspected tornadoes on Thursday.
Multiple buildings were damaged near the city of El Campo, according to the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office.
Reid Strnadel, who helps run a ranch that has been in his family for decades, said he “couldn’t believe” a tornado hit a part of Texas more accustomed to hurricanes.
He told it CNN affiliate KHOU the twister blew up one of the family’s barns, sending chunks of sheet metal and wood flying hundreds of feet.
Despite the devastation in Wharton County, “no major damage or injuries have been reported at this time. We will provide updates as they occur,” the sheriff’s office said Thursday.
“Those in the east, please stay safe and be alert to the weather.”
Parts of the east coast may be flooded
Heavy rain from the Florida Panhandle to New York State threatens to derail travel plans on Sunday.
Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia face a level 2 out of 5 risk for severe storms on Sunday.
Travel has already been crippled in northern New Jersey, where a gaping sinkhole opened along Interstate 80 in Wharton on Thursday. The state transportation department had to close part of I-80 emergency repairs.
‘Widespread power outages expected’ in parts of the West
A series of storm systems in the Pacific Ocean will batter a number of western states this weekend with high winds, intense rain and heavy mountain snow.
High wind warnings are in effect in the lower Northwest, Northern California and parts of the Rockies, where forecasters predict winds of 60 to 100 km/h and isolated gusts of more than 120 km/h.
“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected,” the National Weather Service warned. “Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.”
Parts of the Cascades, the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies could see 6 to 18 inches of snowfall and wind gusts around 75 mph, making travel nearly impossible.
The winds are also causing intense waves along most of the west coast, where a series of high surf and coastal flooding warnings are in effect.
Then there is the threat of dangerous rainfall. By the end of the weekend, totals of 3 to 10 inches are likely in the lower parts of Washington and the Oregon Cascades, as well as the coastal mountains of northwestern California.
The swampy weather can lead to river flooding mudslides in the northwestthe National Weather Service warned.
