With the aim of sharing their love for whiskey and dispelling stereotypes about what women drink and in particular that whiskey is somehow only for men, two cousins who acquired a taste for the drink during their travels through the land a stop in Long Beach for a tasting with their newly launched brand.
“We organize a lot of women-centric events because we are women and we want to bring more women into the whiskey world and connect with women who are already whiskey drinkers,” says Anna Axster, who launched von Schroder with her cousin Wendelin this year Lodestar Whiskey.
The pair will work together Women who drink whiskya whiskey club founded in 2013 to connect like-minded women who love whiskey or want to learn more about whiskey, for the November 20 event. It takes place in Long Beach’s Watch Me! Sports Bar, California first bar to broadcast mainly women’s sports.
“It just seemed like the perfect trifecta of three organizations coming together to celebrate whiskey and women in that space,” Axster said.

Axster and von Schroder both worked in artist management and toured with bands, developing their love of whiskey while sipping the drink backstage in bars and restaurants across the country.
“We really got into it through traveling and whiskey was the drink of choice in that space and that world,” Axster said.
They got so excited about it that they decided to start their own whiskey brand with the aim of appealing to female drinkers.
“We developed our love for whiskey over the years while we were in the entertainment industry and traveling around, and we met other women who really love whiskey too. But we all felt like there wasn’t really a brand out there that we as millennial women really felt represented. We also felt that whiskey was still marketed mainly to men and not so much to women, so we wanted to change that,” said Von Schroder.
Lodestar is a blend of pure high Rye bourbon and American single malt whiskey, resulting in a smooth taste with hints of caramel, citrus and a malted aftertaste.
“It’s accessible, yet doesn’t let you forget that you’re drinking whiskey,” says Axster. “It can stand out on its own, it is very smooth and you can enjoy it purely. It doesn’t water down too quickly on ice, but it also has enough backbone to stand out in a cocktail,” she added.
The cousins are not the only women behind a new whiskey brand. Multi-Grammy winning star in August Beyoncé collaborated with whiskey maker Moët Hennessy to create a new luxury brand called SirDavis. But the Long Beach tasting will be all about Lodestar, as people can try it neat or in cocktails, as Von Schroder, Axster and members of Women Who Whiskey talk about the new female-led whiskey brand.
