New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim will “definitely” try to buy Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, an Old Trafford insider has said.
The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag last week after a dreadful start to the season, with Man Utd currently in 13th place in the Premier League.
Man Utd Quick action was taken to appoint Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim as Ten Hag’s successor on Friday and the Portuguese coach will start on November 11.
Amorim has a huge job on their hands: the Red Devils have won just three of their first ten games of the Premier League season, while only Crystal Palace and newly promoted Southampton have scored fewer goals.
There have been many rumors about who Amorim could sign in January or next summer, with many Sporting players reportedly on the agenda.
Gyokeres, who scored a hat-trick in Sporting’s 4-1 win over Man City on Tuesday eveningt, has taken his goals to 23 in 16 games in all competitions this season.
When Gyokeres was recently asked about possibly joining Man Utd, he replied: “Are you going to Manchester United with Amorim? Don’t know. I’m here. As you can see, I’m enjoying myself at Sporting.
“It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad that he (Amorim) is leaving. We wish him all the best.”

And now former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown – who is still very well connected at Old Trafford – insists the Red Devils will “definitely” pursue Gyokeres, while Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund fail.
Brown said Football insider: “He’s a real striker, that’s what United need. He can play with the ball in his feet, he is strong, he makes very intelligent runs and he can finish.
“He’s certainly someone they’ve been looking at, and probably even more so now. I know there is some doubt about the levels he has played at and whether he could make the step up, but I don’t think he will have a problem with that.
“If you look at who United have at the moment, Zirkzee is nowhere near the level he wants. Hojlund is improving and doing his best, but he is not yet the finished product.
“But Gyokeres can offer everything that United are currently missing in those two. The manager knows him better than anyone, so he knows the strengths and weaknesses.
“He will be key to getting this deal done, but from what I hear it won’t be in January. If it works, it will be at the end of the season.”
