China’s response to Donald Trump’s victory will be “careful and measured” as the administration returns to its “playbook” on how to deal with the returning president, ours says Asia correspondent Nicole Johnston.

Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry said it would cooperate with Washington on the basis of “mutual respect” and “peaceful coexistence.”

But behind closed doors it will be a “different scene” when it comes to the “chaotic” and “unpredictable” relations with Trump, Johnston says.

“For the Chinese government, they’re going to have to go back to their playbook and try to figure out how to deal with President Trump,” she added.

A Trump promise to impose sweeping tariffs on Chinese imports will likely be the “big problem,” she says.

“Leading up to this election, Trump had said he wanted tariffs of 10 to 20% globally, and 60% when it came to China.

“If this continues, it is forecast to reduce this country’s growth target by half.

“So China will be very concerned about that.”

Johnston says questions also remain about what relations will be like between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and how the new president will deal with Taiwan, after he recently questioned Washington’s support for the island’s democracy.
