CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A family-owned burger joint had a nightmare before Christmas.
“Actually, when we just left here to go home, we get the alarm. We look into the camera, we see people inside, so we rush over here,” Harold Riley said.
It’s been a rough start to the holidays for Riley and his company, Burger Beach HideAway. Early Monday morning he received an alarm message. So he came back to his restaurant, arriving about three minutes after a suspected robber left the building.
Riley said the thief broke in using crowbars on two rear doors.
Only one person was captured on camera in Riley’s security footage. The person on camera is seen behind the bar, browsing the register. Riley said there was no money left in the register, only $40 in rolls of quarters for the pool tables. It was the damage caused by the burglary that hurt the restaurant.
“The window frames in the back, the alarm system,” Riley said. “That was a big thing and we thought our insurance would cover it, but they said it’s not covered. So that’s how things work.”
Riley expects somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 in damages, either way, it’s money that isn’t in the budget.
‘It’s a lot, you know what I mean. We don’t mess with anyone and we try to do everything we can for the community. To be beaten like that, right before Christmas, it really hurts. Like I said, everything can be replaced, the damage is really heavy for us.”
The robbery damaged two rear doors, an office door and the security and alarm system.
Riley said police are investigating the burglary.
Riley said his loyal regulars have supported him and his business. He doesn’t ask for help, but Riley just asks for support for his business. He said people can show their support by stopping by for a bite to eat.
