A judge has denied Jay-Z’s attempts to… lawsuit against the rapper and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl more than twenty years ago.
In the lawsuit, originally filed in October, a woman identified as “Jane Doe” sued Combs for allegedly raping her at a party after the 2000 MTV video. Music Awards. The complaint read amended on December 8 to include the claim that Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was also present and participated in the attack.
Jay-Z has denied all allegations, as has his lawyer Alex Spiro tried to have the case dismissed after the alabama woman acknowledged inconsistencies in her allegations in a NBC News report published earlier this month. Spiro doubled down last week, speaking outside Roc Nation’s headquarters in New York: saying the rap mogul is angry about the suit and that “Mr. Carter has nothing to do with Mr. Combs’ case.”
On Thursday, Judge Analisa Torres denied Combs’ hopes that the lawsuit would be dismissed in her written order. Torres also ruled that the woman accusing the two artists could proceed anonymously at this early stage of the trial, but may have to reveal her identity at a later date if the case proceeds.
The judge also chastised Carter’s attorney for what she described as his “belligerent movements” and “inflammatory language” against the plaintiff’s attorney, calling them inappropriate. “Carter’s attorney’s relentless filing of combative motions containing inflammatory language and ad hominem attacks is inappropriate, a waste of judicial resources, and a tactic unlikely to benefit his client. The Court will not expedite the judicial process simply because counsel demands it,” Torres wrote in part in her order.
Combs is currently jailed in New York awaiting criminal trial on federal sex trafficking charges. He is also facing a wave of other sexual assault lawsuits.
The Jane Doe’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, wrote in a statement The Hollywood Reporter after the judge’s ruling: “Normally I do not comment on court decisions. I will say that the coordinated and desperate efforts to target me as counsel for alleged victims have come to naught.”
THR has also reached out to Combs’ attorney for comment.
