Three men were found guilty by the Ho Circuit Court of participating in a robbery that resulted in GH₵825,000 worth of cash and valuables, and were given a total sentence of 125 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
Ernest Sokpi Amevor, a 32-year-old driver and self-proclaimed peacemaker; Mark Billy Agbozo, a 31-year-old teacher; and Nzete Chukunhru Best, a 28-year-old used clothing dealer, are the convicted persons.
Sections 20(1) and 149(1) of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960 (Act 29), as amended by the Criminal Offenses (Amendment) Act 2003 (Act 646), were used to convict the men.
The robbery took place in the Volta Region near Ayitikope-Akatsi on May 29, 2021. A Daewoo taxi with registration number GE 3739-12 was used by the criminals to break into the house of lottery agent Atsu Kumordzi.
GH₵160,000 which is equivalent to GH₵640,000 in CFA francs and GH₵25,000 belonging to Peace Lordeena Sedofia were taken by them.
After investigation, the matter was forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for consultation. After a rigorous trial, overseen by His Lordship Felix Datsomor, the three were found guilty on several counts.
For their respective crimes, the suspects were each sentenced to 25 years in prison, to be served consecutively.
The search continues for six accomplices who allegedly helped commit the crime and worked as spies.
