To understand the forbidding world that Donald Trump will face, open the 75-page report of a bipartisan national security commission, published in July. “The threats facing the United States are the most serious and challenging the nation has faced since 1945 and include the potential for a major war in the short term.” America may have to fight several regional conflicts at the same time, which could culminate in a global conflict. The country, the commissioners said, is not ready for such wars. Worse, Americans are barely aware of the darkening of the world around them.
