Now an urgent question is being asked about the use of hotels to house asylum seekers.
Dame Angela Eagle, the Home Secretary, says Labor remains “absolutely committed” to ending the use of hotels for asylum seekers.
However, she points out that the government has a duty to house asylum seekers in “safe, secure and appropriate” accommodation and that they are “treated with dignity”.
“Hotels are not a permanent solution, but a necessary temporary step to keep the system under control and ensure it does not descend into chaos.”
She says Labor is committed to ending the use of hotels, but they are still “key to meeting our legal responsibilities” for the “nearest future”.
Sir Gavin Williamson, who asked the urgent question, said his constituents had received the “devastating news” that a hotel would be established in the area to house asylum seekers.
“This was after it closed last year,” he said.
Sir Gavin says this will have a “significant impact”.
“What we have seen so far this year… is 19,326 people who have crossed the Channel since the other party came to power.”
He says this is significantly higher than the same period last year.
Sir Gavin has accused Labor of a “complete lack of transparency” and said the party is issuing a “dictate” rather than consulting.
He asks for a list of all hotels that will be established to accommodate migrants.
Dame Angela responds, saying Labor “inherited an asylum system that was brought to a standstill” by the “doomed” Rwanda policy – which failed.
“The Rwanda plan was an expensive distraction – it was not a deterrent.”
She reveals that there are currently 220 hotels in operation.
At the time of the election, 213 were in use, but since July 7 they have been closed and 14 have opened.
