In 2019, Netflix announced that there would be a biopic about the legendary professional wrestler Hulk Hogan was in the making. Chris Hemsworth was chosen to play the role WWE Hall of Famer who rose to fame in the 1980s and was known for creating the ‘Hulkamania’ craze. Directed by joker‘s Todd Phillips, is said to have chronicled his journey to success, winning his first WWE World Heavyweight Championship from The Iron Sheik (whom he held for more than 1,400 days) and how the Hulkster’s momentum ran through the 1990s.
Earlier this year, Phillips opened up about the project’s production, stating that this was the case had been largely demolished. Many wrestling fans wondered why, although he declined to elaborate further at the time. Now, Hogan has provided some more insight into what went wrong, explaining that the measures in the contract did not go through.

“They missed a bit of a step in the contract, yes (when Patrick Bet-David said Netflix messed up). There was a payment that was not made at the correct time,” Hogan said on the website PBD podcastsT. “The script was great. Scott Silver, who wrote the script joker, Wolf of Wall Streetsome other films, said, ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever written.’ When I read it I think, oh my god, this is really good. At the time, I was in a space where I was telling him the positive things about wrestling.
He continues, noting that the script was actually very dark and that it was believed that Hemsworth could have won an Oscar for his performance. He also explains how it would have cost fans to the point where he took on the role of Hollywood Hogan and left the WWE for WCW. If it had worked as well as they predicted, there would have been a chance, according to Hogan to make a sequel.
“I spent about three years with this writer, back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark, if that were the right word. But it was probably what the audience would want to see. When I read it I thought, ‘Oh my God, if this thing comes out…’, that’s what people were talking about Chris Hemsworth had never played a real person before earlier and it could probably win an Oscar, this thing is so powerful.
The pop culture zeitgeist has seen a renewed interest in the sport since A24 The Iron Claw biopic that followed the tragic story of the Von Erichs. Last month, Netflix released the controversial Mr. McMahon series which was about many of Vince McMahon’s scandals during his time taking WWE to the top. This also applies to the last sexual assault allegations from Mrs. Janel Granta former WWE employee who accused both McMahon and former Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis of lewd acts.
