MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell accused president-elect Donald Trump of public belittling Elon Musk in a “twisted” attempt to demonstrate power over him, while “the richest person in the world” is used as a symbolic crutch to threaten potential opponents.
The host’s response came after Trump addressed Republicans in the House of Representatives with a sharp remark aimed at Musk, who has been staying at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate since before the election.
‘Elon isn’t going home. I can’t get rid of him,” Trump reportedly claimed told the roomwhile Musk was present.
Analysis of the joke O’Donnell unleashed on Trump.
Donald Trump trotted Elon Musk into that room to show Republicans in the House of Representatives two things. First of all, the richest person in the world is on my side. The richest person in the world can help you or hurt you, depending on how helpful you are to me.
But here’s the other thing. The richest person in the world is not the most powerful person in the world. That was Donald Trump’s message to these representatives today, spoken and unspoken.
And what he said out loud about Elon Musk, just to publicly demonstrate his power over Elon Musk, just to humiliate Elon Musk, as Donald Trump must do – as Donald Trump’s twisted psyche demands of him. Donald Trump told all Republican members of the House of Representatives that Elon will not be going home. I can’t get rid of him.
And then everyone laughed at that – they laughed that awkward laugh. But they laughed when Donald Trump made a joke about someone on his team, a joke that everyone knows to be true. A joke that person paints is pathetic. As Donald Trump’s personal sense of superiority demands. Donald Trump’s jealousy of Musk’s wealth must be eating away at every second he looks at the richest person in the world.
But at least in public, Donald Trump gets to do what he loves most. Insult and humiliate. Insult and humiliate, in this case, Elon Musk.
While O’Donnell seemed determined to push aside his own conclusions about Trump, others may have simply seen it as a light-hearted joke, as evidenced by the laughter it provoked from those in attendance.
