Connecticut mother searches for missing necklace containing son’s ashes at CT Beach

NORWALK, Conn. (WABC) — A Connecticut mother is desperately searching for a necklace containing her son’s ashes that she lost while walking on Calf Pasture Beach in Connecticut.

Leslie Soyland of Norwalk, Connecticut said she was taking off her sweatshirt during her daily walk on Nov. 6 when she realized she had lost the necklace.

“I run three miles every day, and I was walking, and it was one of those days where it started out cold and got warmer, and I had a sweatshirt on, so I got warm, and I put the sweatshirt over my head , and I think I lost it there. It was on a 2-foot chain,” Soyland told Eyewitness News.

Soyland said she has worn the necklace every day for 10 years.

‘I got it the day he woke up. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law gave it to me and they put the ashes in it, and I’ve been wearing it ever since,” Soyland said.”

Her son, Johnny, died 10 years ago and is survived by a son.

“When he passed away, his son was seven and he was the best father. He came home and beamed when he saw his son,” Soyland said.

She took to her Facebook to ask residents to keep an eye out for the chain.

Dozens of people have reached out offering to use metal detectors to locate the missing chain.

“I can’t believe the reaction. It’s been so much fun. And I have people calling me and offering to look with metal detectors and it’s just been amazing. It really is, you know, with so much bad stuff out there, it is fun,” Soyland said.

Soyland said the sentimental necklace is everything to her.

“I went back and looked. I probably covered another six miles that day, just walking back and forth trying to find it. But the response was so overwhelming. It was heartwarming and also sad, because it kind of brings it all together.” back, you know, so but I wore it every day for ten years and I feel very lost without it. And it’s not like it was worth much financially, but worth everything to me,” Soyland said.

If found, Leslie can be contacted at 203-219-2994.

“I just feel like there’s a part of… it sounds funny, but part of me, you know? And I’m sure there’s a lot of people who don’t understand, and probably think it’s strange, but it’s what I had all the time and that made me feel close to him because we were very close,” Soyland said
