As teased in AugustGemini comes to Google Home, starting with “AI Camera Search” and “Help me create.”
Powered by Gemini, AI Camera Search is pitched to let your Nest Cams “start understanding what’s happening.” Video clips in Google Home will add detailed “AI descriptions” to “make it easier for you to search and view your recorded footage.” You’ll see them on the Activity tab.
Examples include:
- …instead of the usual label ‘animal or activity detected’, the AI-generated description could be ‘the dog is digging in the garden’.
- …you may get ‘Person leaving package on veranda’ or ‘Parking’.
Meanwhile, you can search the camera history with natural queries such as:
- Has the dog been outside today?
- Was the waste put out on the street yesterday?
- Did the USPS truck come by today?
- Was a van here today?
- Did the kids play in the backyard this afternoon?
Once it’s available, a new search field will appear at the top of the Activity tab.
The Gemini-powered AI Camera Search will initially be available to “select Nest Aware Plus users” in US English who are part of Google Home’s public preview. On the Public Preview page in the top right corner of the Google Home app, there is an on/off switch for ‘Experimental AI features.” This will be rolled out starting this week.
This button is gray if you don’t have a Nest Aware Plus subscription or if the feature isn’t yet available to you
The other Gemini feature coming soon is ‘Help Me Create’ in the Google Home app. You can describe what you want to do and Google will create an automation:
Security:
- Don’t forget to lock up at night
- Make it look like someone is home
Health and Wellness:
- Help me sleep better
- Set up morning workouts
Convenience at home:
Getting things done:
- Remind me to take out the trash
- Help me remember to pick up packages
We’ll start rolling this out to a small group of Nest Aware Plus subscribers later this year in public preview, in the Home app on Android, starting in English and US only.
