3 new takes on classic side dishes to take your Thanksgiving menu to the next level

HOUSTON – Thanksgiving is just around the corner. If you haven’t already, here’s your reminder to start planning your menu.

Although the turkey is usually seen as the “star of the spread,” what you serve alongside it doesn’t have to be bland and boring.

At many gatherings, traditional side dishes such as stuffing or dressing, green bean casserole, and sweet potato casserole are on the menu.

This year, break the routine and put a new dish on the table.

Leigh Ann Chatagnier, cookbook author and food blogger behind “My Diary of Us,” drops by Houston life with three recipes inspired by those classic sides. Plus a new twist on the traditional pumpkin pie for dessert.

If you like the crispy bits or edges on top of the filling, then this recipe is for you.

Instead of making this filling in a baking dish, Leigh Ann prefers to use a muffin tin.

This way everyone gets a bite of the crunchy topping.

You can also omit the sausage and add mushrooms for a meatless meal.

When it comes to green bean casserole, it’s difficult to keep your green beans from getting soggy or mushy.

But in this recipe, Leigh Ann first “roasts” her green beans on a baking sheet in the oven and then tops them with a simple mushroom sauce (nothing wrong with canned stuff). Problem solved!

No surprise: she tops it off with everyone’s favorite onion strings from a French friend!
