Hydrangeas tend to undergo a slight color change when they are transplanted as they have adapted to their new soil when you first bring them home.
Hydrangea varieties such as hydrangea macrophylla and serrata can range in color from pink to blue, with all shades of fuchsia, plum and violet in between.
Blue is not a very common color for flowering plants, which makes it quite attractive for gardeners who want their outdoor space to stand out.
What you may not know is that there could be beautiful shades of blue hidden in your garden, waiting to show their true colors.
Under the right conditions, some varieties of hydrangeas can exhibit that beloved, sought-after shade.
If you already have a hydrangea in your garden and dream of a sea of blue, you can try changing the color with a home remedy that one gardener has found works for them.
On the Hydrangeas in Britain Facebook page, Sarah Hick shared how she could turn her store-bought pink hydrangeas blue without having to buy anything.
She wrote: “I absolutely love my blue hydrangea. This year I was told a trick to put coppers (coins) in the ground, last year it turned pink, now it’s an even more vibrant blue!”
Referring to the photos of the bright blue hydrangea, Sarah said: “This is a French hydrangea, I believe. Absolutely beautiful.
“I also have a pink one that I recently bought and it gives the garden a really nice color.”
However, many gardeners claim that aluminum sulfate is necessary to change the color of hydrangeas blue, which can be found in almost any garden center.
Organic materials, such as coffee grounds, eggshells or citrus peels, are another, more natural method of making soil more acidic.
Simply grind any of the previously mentioned ingredients and work them into the soil.
These changes will occur gradually, so if you do this consistently, it can take a full year to reach the correct acidity.
