Donald Trump’s recent victory in the 2024 US presidential election has created a global ripple effect, raising expectations about the potential geopolitical and economic implications of his return to the White House. For India, Trump’s victory could herald a new chapter in a partnership marked by a longstanding understanding between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi was among the first international leaders to wish the President-elect his victory.

This mutual admiration and aligned strategic vision could further consolidate a strong alliance between India and the US, boosting India’s position on the global stage.
Donald Trump’s leadership style, which relies heavily on an assertive foreign policy, could benefit India’s quest for global recognition, including its long-sought permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). With the US supporting India more assertively, a tangible step towards restructuring the UN Security Council could be feasible. While Trump’s support is an asset, resistance from other permanent members remains a hurdle. The renewed one US-India Relationship It could still allow India to push harder for reforms, with the support of a superpower eager to reshape global institutions to reflect contemporary dynamics.
Moreover, Trump’s victory likely signals a continuation of America’s tough stance on China. With India and the US viewing China’s growing influence as a strategic threat, India can expect stronger US support in the Indo-Pacific region. Enhanced cooperation in defense, cybersecurity and intelligence sharing will provide India with the tools to counter China’s economic and military advances. This shared goal is vital to India because it allows New Delhi to assertively protect its own territorial and maritime interests.
One of the most immediate implications of Trump’s victory could be India’s relationship with Pakistan, especially on Kashmir. Trump’s support for India could translate into even greater international pressure on Pakistan, further diminishing its influence and standing on the world stage. Modi’s government is poised to benefit from a White House that reflects India’s demand for transparency and accountability from Pakistan, regarding its actions in Kashmir and its persistent anti-India narratives.
Trump’s re-election campaign emphasized his focus on revitalizing the US economy, which has faced challenges since the pandemic. A strengthened US economy could indirectly benefit India in several ways. Increased US consumption could boost India’s export sectors, including technology, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. Moreover, thanks to Trump’s pro-business policies, US investments in India could see a significant increase as US companies look for friendly markets with high growth potential.
Trump’s policy of supporting major innovators like Elon Musk signals a potential for further cooperation in technology and space exploration, sectors where India’s progress is significant. India’s space program has gained significant recognition in recent years, and with Trump’s support for SpaceX and private space companies, India could collaborate with US companies on new, impactful initiatives.
The India-US Defense Partnershipthat saw record gun sales during Trump’s first term will likely continue to grow. In an era of increased global uncertainty, closer defense ties are mutually beneficial. As India diversifies its defense purchases, the US remains a partner of choice, providing cutting-edge technology and strengthening India’s military capabilities. An increase in joint US-India military exercises, better intelligence sharing and cyber defense cooperation could become key elements of the partnership.
In addition to defense, energy security will be an area where both countries can benefit from strengthened ties. India, with its growing energy demand, could benefit from better access to US liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other resources. A secure energy partnership would provide India with a reliable energy source, potentially reducing dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers and strengthening its energy strategy.
While Trump’s pro-business stance is good for bilateral trade, his protectionist tendencies could pose challenges. Trump’s first term emphasized an “America First” policy, with potential trade restrictions and tariffs aimed at boosting American industry. These policies could resurface, requiring diplomatic engagement from India to ensure two-way trade remains robust. India must remain vigilant and work to preserve the benefits of existing trade agreements with the US while exploring new sectors for partnership.
Immigration policy will also require attention. Trump’s emphasis on strict immigration controls could impact Indian nationals seeking work or study opportunities in the US. Given India’s vast technology talent, which has traditionally been welcomed by US companies, Trump’s position on legal immigration will be a crucial negotiating topic. While pushing for stricter immigration policies, India must work to secure a legal framework that ensures the mobility of skilled professionals.
One of Trump’s most controversial legacies concerns his approach to the Middle East, especially Iran. Trump’s re-election could mean increased pressure on Iran, which could resonate with India’s strategic interests. A weakened Iran could reduce the influence of its allied groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis, stabilizing the region to some extent. With Israel likely to gain more influence, India could find opportunities to strengthen its defense and economic ties with Tel Aviv – a crucial partner for India in defense technology and agriculture.
Trump has indicated his willingness to continue dialogue with Russia, a position that could ease tensions in Ukraine. A de-escalation could stabilize global markets, benefiting economies around the world, including India. A detente between the US and Russia would indirectly benefit India, allowing the country to continue its partnership with Russia without the pressure exerted by the US and EU sanctions regimes. However, it remains to be seen whether Trump’s support for Putin will lead to a tangible resolution to the conflict.
The re-election of Donald Trump offers India an opportunity to deepen its strategic, economic and cultural ties with the US. As Prime Minister Modi and President Trump strengthen their rapport, India can benefit from a mutually beneficial relationship, positioned to advance its regional and global ambitions. However, this new era requires India to practice careful diplomacy. Economic optimism must be balanced with caution, especially given Trump’s protectionist stance on trade and strict immigration policies.
The ‘golden age’ that Trump is ushering in for America could indeed resonate in India, provided both countries pursue their shared goals with clarity and prudence. As India embraces this renewed partnership, the road ahead holds the promise of progress, prosperity and a formidable alliance on the world stage.
