Dubai wants to accelerate its sustainability agenda by participating in a major clean energy initiative: installing the world’s largest roof solar system at an airport.

According to Interesting technologyThis groundbreaking project will be a joint effort between Dubai Airports and Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, a subsidiary of the Dubai Energy and Water Authority. Together they plan to reduce carbon pollution caused by aviation by installing more than 62,000 solar energy on the roof panels spread across two airports in Dubai.

The aviation industry causes a lot of pollution. By 2022, 2% of global CO2 emissions come from aviation, and the industry is growing faster than other forms of transportation, such as rail and shipping.

This new green energy project involves the installation of 62,904 solar panels between Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) airports. State news agency WAM estimates the initiative will reduce carbon emissions by 23,000 metric tons (25,353 metric tons) per year.

At both airports the solar panels will generate 60,346 MWh of energy per year, and the project is estimated to be fully operational in 2026, according to Interesting Engineering.

Solar energy is a clean, renewable energy source that supplies cheaper electricity than dirty fuel sources. It also helps make communities more resilient in the face of its consequences extreme weather events that can often cause major damage to the electricity grid.

Plus, it’s an impactful way to reduce pollution, helping us preserve our carbon footprint air cleaner and the environment safer for the future.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, sees the high energy consumption of airports as an opportunity to create this positive change.

“For us it’s not just about installation solar panels; it’s about embedding sustainability at the core of everything we do. Every kilowatt we generate from renewable sources brings us closer to reducing our environmental footprint and future-proofing our operations. This is about setting the standard and leading the way for what a truly sustainable airport can achieve,” said Griffiths.
