Google Calendar is introducing a new feature that gives users more control over the visual aspects of the app. If you’ve ever been mesmerized and overwhelmed by Google Calendar’s colorful event illustrations, you’ll be happy (or perhaps indifferent?) to know that a toggle has now been added to turn them off.

While playing around with the latest version of Google Calendar (2024.42.0-687921584-release), we came across this useful new option in the app’s settings. For the uninitiated, event illustrations, also called “styles,” are automatically generated images that appear next to events in the calendar view. These images are triggered by keywords in event descriptions such as “cinema” or “coffee” and provide a visual cue for quick identification. Each month also includes a unique illustration depicting seasonal themes and holidays.
Back in September, we reported that Google Calendar had added a whole new set of add-ons for all kinds of events, and even updated the monthly ones. And now it looks like the app is also adding an option to turn them off completely. So if you don’t like artistic flair, you can cut it out of your life.
You can see what the app looks like with event illustrations turned off. In person, it seems quite dreary and monotonous without these lively little touches. That said, I can see the appeal for those who need to cram as much information as possible into their calendar. Once the illustrations disappear, you’ll notice that there are more events on the screen, which is useful if your schedule is tight.
When disabled, these illustrations will not be displayed even on the event details page when tapping on a single event. But I wouldn’t blame you if you instead stuck to those sweet, eye-catching images instead of staring at endless rows of boring office meetings.
It’s worth noting that turning off event illustrations currently only applies to events and doesn’t seem to affect monthly illustrations. Disabling monthly illustrations has been an option on larger devices (tablets or screens with DPI greater than 600) for a long time, but this feature has not yet made its way to smartphones.
The new toggle isn’t available to everyone yet, but it should appear in your Google Calendar settings soon.
