Carragher slams Amorim for Man Utd trio ‘can’t run’; one star labeled ‘horrific’ and ‘terrible’

Jamie Carragher hit out at Ruben Amorim over his team selection in Manchester United’s defeat to Newcastle on Monday, insisting three of the players in the starting XI “couldn’t run”.

United have now lost five of their last six Premier League games under Amorim, who has scored just seven points in his first eight games in charge.

The first half hour of this 2-0 defeat to Newcastle was just as bad as it was for United.

“You’re looking at the worst pound-for-pound football club in the country,” Gary Neville said at that point in the match. “They are so bad.”

“These are worrying times for Manchester United and Amorim. He knew it was a big job, but I think it’s much bigger than he ever imagined.”

It was around this time that Joshua Zirkzee was hooked on Kobbie Mainoo, with Amorim realizing his baffling decision to play Dutch international on the left of central striker Rasmus Hojlund was a mistake.

Zirkzee was sarcastically cheered off the field and walked through the tunnel before returning to the bench.

“That’s cruel,” Neville said of Zirkzee. “I haven’t seen that so often at Old Trafford in the 43 years I’ve been coming here.”

Carragher had his say on Zirkzee after the match, questioning Amorim’s decision to start him, as well as Casemiro and Cristian Eriksen, at the bottom of midfield, as none of them have the mobility required to succeed in this system.

He said: “We talked about Eriksen and Casemiro on this show 18 months ago. That depends on the manager.

“These players cannot run away. We know that. It is up to the manager to put these two players in that position and in that system. It’s a big flaw.

“We knew tonight they were going to be ahead and I didn’t think they were going to take a step back because why would you?

“United have been terrible, and you just looked at the lack of mobility and athleticism in their team – not just Eriksen and Casemiro.

“Zirkzee can’t run, he can’t move. I couldn’t see anything other than Newcastle winning that game.”

Carragher also picked Lisandro Martinez, whose defending Neville was described as “horrendous” in his commentary after the Argentine was blamed for both Newcastle goals as he failed to defend crosses into the penalty area.

“Martinez has been terrible,” Carragher claimed. “He’s been caught more in a back three than in a (back) four.”
