Forest of Dean’s mother is ‘lucky’ after van is written off due to deer accident

Ian Harvey, Forestry England’s wildlife manager for the West of England, is based in the Forest of Dean.

He said fallow deer are “the most important deer species” in the area and often travel in groups.

“Anything from two or three to about ten,” he said.

“The impact of deer on vehicles is quite a big problem nationally, but is probably under-recorded because there is no requirement from your insurance company… they just consider it animal-related.”

Despite this, Mr Harvey said his team attended 45 road incidents involving deer last year, and 54 involving wild boar, which can cause “serious damage” to a vehicle.
