Kolkata: This Jewish bakery has been spreading Christmas cheer for 122 years

A Jewish bakery in Calcutta has been attracting hundreds of visitors every Christmas for 122 years and has become an integral part of the city’s festivities.

Nahoum & Sons was founded in 1902 by Nahoum Israel Mordecai and has been run by the same family for generations. The iconic bakery delights visitors with an array of traditional Christmas treats.

The harmonious mix of cultures is unique to the bakery. Although it is a Jewish bakery, the delicious cakes are made by Muslim bakers.

When Christmas arrives, Nahoum’s is filled with the sweet smell of freshly baked cakes, cookies and pastries. The bakery’s famous fruit tarts, which are a highlight of the season, are in high demand. Other popular items include plum cakes, brownies and rum balls.

One of the customers waiting in line outside Nahoum’s Bakery on Christmas told me India Today TV that he had been coming here since his youth.

“I’ve been coming here with my dad since I was a kid. I love the bakery’s fruit pies,” he said.

This Christmas, like every year, hundreds of people flocked to Nahoum’s, eager to enjoy the bakery’s delicacies, not just from Calcutta but from across the country.

Another customer, who was visiting Kolkata from Bengaluru, said he had come to the bakery on the recommendation of a friend.

“It’s an annual ritual to visit Nahoum’s this time of year,” said another customer.
