URBANA – An Urbana man has been sentenced to four years’ probation for aggravated robbery after spending 545 days in jail awaiting trial.
Deandre Young, 22, was one of four people arrested in 2023 for carjacking at Crispin Auto in Urbana.
Urbana police said two female subjects were test driving a vehicle and when they returned to the parking lot, a male subject near them held what appeared to be a gun to an employee’s head while one of the women held the employee sprayed with pepper spray.
The four subjects then got into the car and fled.
The vehicle was later spotted by license plate readers in Savoy and then stopped in Chenoa, at which time Young was arrested along with Michael Roberts, 21, of Champaign, Michaella Campbell, 22, of Urbana and a juvenile girl.
Young was charged with aggravated vehicle hijacking, a Class X felony, and aggravated larceny, a Class 1 felony.
He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge and saw the hijacking charge dropped.
Young was sentenced to 180 days in jail, but is entitled to 545 days in jail. He was also sentenced to 48 months of probation, which included 100 hours of public service, as well as substance abuse and mental health evaluations.
