Man disguised with eye patch accused of stealing expensive glasses

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Westlake police have arrested a man who allegedly stole a pair of expensive glasses while using an eye patch as a disguise.

On Saturday around 5 p.m., Westlake police received a report from Eye Candy Optical that a man wearing an eye patch, a green jacket and a red hat grabbed two expensive pairs of glasses and ran out of the store, according to a news release.

Police were initially unable to catch him, but found the getaway car and used the city’s license plate readers to track him down.

That address was that of Matthew Hudak, 53, of Lakeside Marblehead. On Monday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol stopped Hudak while he was driving the same car used in the getaway, the news release said.

When officers stopped Hudak, he was not wearing the eye patch. However, he did have a warrant out of Fulton County for theft, said Westlake Police Capt. Gerald Vogel.

As for the eye patch, police say it was most likely some kind of disguise, Vogel said.

“It doesn’t appear he needs an eye patch medically,” Vogel said.

Hudak was charged with theft and was arraigned Tuesday in Rocky River Municipal Court. The case is expected to go before a Cuyahoga County grand jury. No attorney information for Hudak is listed in the lawsuits.
