After nearly two decades of research into emerging markets, it has become clear that investors are not so much buying the current status of a country’s development, but the path to something better. This applies to both direct foreign investments and portfolio investments in the bond and equity markets.

Does SA realize this? For the past fifteen years the answer has probably been no, but two recent international roadshows (capped by a successful dollar bond issuance) seem to indicate that this kind of thinking is starting to resonate in some places. ..
