Truthout prepares to fulfill Trump’s agenda, with resistance at every turn
Dear Truth Community,
If you are feeling anger, despondency, confusion, and deep fear today, you are not alone. We feel it too. We are heartbroken. Faced with Trump’s fascist agenda, we are desperately concerned about the most vulnerable people among us, including our loved ones and everyone in the world. Truth community, and our minds are racing a million miles a minute trying to map out what needs to be done.
We must give ourselves space to grieve and feel our fear, to feel our anger, and to hold at the forefront the stark truth that millions of real human lives are at stake. And at the same time, we must get to work, take stock of our resources and prepare to throw ourselves into the movement with full force.
Journalism is a linchpin of that movement. Even as we reel, we muster all the energy we can to face what is coming, because we know that publishing the truth is one of the sharpest weapons against fascism.
There are many scary plans for the Trump agenda, and we intend to devote ourselves to thorough reporting on each of them and, crucially, to mapping the movements opposing them. We also recognize that Trump poses a serious threat to journalism itself, and that we must take this seriously from the start.
Last week the four of us sat down to have some difficult but necessary conversations Truth under a Trump presidency. How would we defend our publication against an avalanche of far-right lawsuits that want to put us out of business? How can we protect our reporters when they have to cover outbreaks of political violence or when they are targeted by the authorities? How can we urgently produce the practical analysis, tools and movement coverage you need now – breaking from our normal routines to meet a terrifying moment in a way that best serves you?
It will be a tough, scary four years of producing social justice-based journalism. We must deliver news, strategy, liberating ideas, tools and movement-boosting solutions with a power we’ve never had before. And at the same time, we urgently need to protect our ability to do so.
We know this is such a painful time and donations are understandably the last thing on your mind. But we must ask for your support, which is needed in a new and urgent way.
We promise to shift into even higher gear to bring you truthful news that counters the misinformation, vitriol, hatred and violence. We pledge to publish analysis that will meet the needs of the movements we all rely on to survive the next four years and even build the future. We promise to be responsive and recognize you as members of our community with a critical role and voice in this work.
