Luke Littler put on a show in Wolverhampton to reach the semi-finals of the Grand Slam in a 16-2 domination of Jermaine Wattimena.
Littler got off to the most spectacular start, scoring eight darts in a nine-darter in the second leg before a throw break and ending the first session 4-1 after seven maximums in just five legs.
Littler couldn’t be slowed down and it wasn’t until the ninth leg that he went one leg without hitting a 180, a symbol of his dominance.
Then the big box office started, with the 17-year-old sensation holding 104, plus 164 and 167 box office on the bull to secure a huge 8-2 lead.
Wattimena could not gain a foothold in the match as Littler hit the trebles with such ferocity – the ‘Nuke’ won the next six legs on the spin to take a 14-2 lead.
As he then put himself one leg away from a seismic victory with a throw, ruthlessly exploiting every opportunity, he left 110 for the match and nailed it to the tops to drive the crowd wild.
It is the biggest defeat ever inflicted on anyone in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, overtaking Michael Smith’s 16-3 thrashing of Phil Taylor.
Littler finished with an average of 105, 12 180s, a 62% success in doubles, and achieved victory in less than 28 minutes.
“I felt really confident coming in tonight,” Littler said Air sports.
“I played so well. I’m so happy. Fair play to Jermaine. I was too good tonight.”
“When you play so well, you feel a nine-darter coming every time. Every time I go for the 180, the crowd expects that.
“As a player you feel it coming and hopefully it will come.”
With the victory, Littler moves into the top 16 in the world, but that is no surprise for the 17-year-old.
“It just shows how well I played in the ranking tournaments,” he added.
“I am now in the top sixteen. I have looked ahead and if I win this match I will go to number five.
“I’m just looking at tomorrow’s semi-final.”
Grand Slam of Darts: Quarter Final Results
Lucas Kleiner | 16-2 | Jermaine Wattimena |
Gary Anderson | 16-14 | Gian van Veen |
Littler will now be confronted Gary Anderson for the first time ever as he fought to a 16-14 victory over breakout star Gian van Veen.
It was a tense opening session between Van Veen and Anderson, both holding their throws and adding a break each, leaving the Dutchman 3-2 at the break.
From then on, however, the ‘Flying Scotsman’ took control and his doubles finish was spectacular as he knocked out 124 and a Shanghai to take a solid 9-6 lead.
However, Van Veen was ready for battle and brought himself within a leg at 10-9, but gave away a shot chance, Anderson taking 84 to restore a two-leg lead.
Van Veen continued to cling to Anderson and keep himself within a leg, a sensational 140 checkout helped him, but Anderson thrived under the pressure, knocking out 52 on tops to keep himself a leg away from victory.
That did not stop the Dutchman from continuing to come and level the match at 15-14 with a 74 on D16, but Anderson showed his class and booked a place in the semi-finals again on D12.
Anderson finished with a brilliant 57% success in the doubles with 11 maximums and a lead of 99.13.
“I saw the Littler game. It was fantastic, wasn’t it? We were upstairs watching it,” Anderson said. Air sports.
“Luke had a different gravy tonight.
“Maybe I’ll give him a hard kick in the shins before I get up.”
