Helldivers 2’s Democracy Space Station is finally operational and the “Weapon of Mass Liberation” has already destroyed “a small moon”

The time has finally come. After weeks of large orders to complete its construction, Hell divers 2The Democracy Space Station is now fully operational, and Super Earth soldiers everywhere will be happy to know that its power is powerful enough to decimate moons.

An announcement confirms that the ‘Weapon of Mass Liberation’ has destroyed ‘a small moon’ in its first test firing, so we can be sure it will rain freedom on the democracy-hating Terminids and Automata. It is now accessible via the Galactic Map and allows Helldivers to vote on which locations it should move to and what ‘Tactical Actions’ it should take by donating monsters and Republic Points to fund them. Dare I say it: this form of managed democracy is certainly democratic.

At this point there are three tactical actions you can choose from. Planetary Bombardment does exactly what it says on the tin and will unleash “non-stop orbital bombardment” to provide “planet-wide artillery support,” while Eagle Storm will “deploy periodic Eagle Airstrikes during missions.” Finally, Orbital Blockade activates an Anti-Ship Missile System to target enemy spacecraft attempting to leave a planet’s atmosphere. For the latter, the fine print adds that “Defense campaigns cannot get off this planet” and that the “Hellpod Space Optimization Booster is automatically active for all missions” so loyal soldiers can head out with full ammo, stims, and grenades.

At the time of writing, each of the tactical moves is about 38% funded, so hopefully we’ll be able to see them in action when the DSS makes its next move in about 15 hours. Currently, 73% of votes are in favor of going to the automaton-occupied planet Mastia, which recently fell, so it looks like the bots will get a taste of highly concentrated democracy very soon. But will unleashing moon-destroying attacks on a planet filled with Super Earth’s best be safe for those fighting on the front lines? Don’t worry about it. After all, what could go wrong?

From Warhammer 40K to Star Wars, the creative director of Helldivers 2 would “love to take a look at” a lot of IP, but doing them all would be a “not Helldivers” experience.
