‘No national security without climate security,’ says Prime Minister as he announces new emissions target
The Prime Minister opens his press conference at the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, saying that “the world is at a critical juncture in the climate crisis.”
Sir Keir Starmer says Britain has “not only a crucial role to play, but an opportunity to seize”.
Tackling the crisis “will make us safer in the here and now,” he argues, pointing to several impacts of climate change, such as flooding.
“This is the path to national security, energy independence and the economic stability needed to raise the living standards of working people,” said Sir Keir.
“There is no national security, there is no economic security, there is no global security without climate security.”
PM targets 2035 for emissions target
The Prime Minister says there is a “huge opportunity” for Britain “to lead the world in the economy of tomorrow”, which will mean better jobs and economic growth in the UK.
He points to the efforts his government has already taken to reduce emissions in the short and long term, such as scrapping the ban on onshore wind energy, pledging not to issue new oil and gas permits and securing investments in things like carbon capture technology. .
Sir Keir then announces that Britain has committed to a new target of cutting emissions by 81% below 1990 levels by 2035.
The British government, he says, is “delivering on our promise for good jobs, cheaper bills and higher growth” and has shown at this summit that it is “back as a world leader”.
