Minnesota is one of 27 states that will have federal observers on Election Day.
According to the Justice Department, the Civil Rights Division will coordinate and oversee 86 jurisdictions — in Minnesota, including Minneapolis and other cities in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.
As the agency responsible for enforcing federal voting rights, the DOJ says it regularly deploys staff to monitor compliance.
“I would say things are on a higher level now,” said Kyle Loven, a former FBI attorney for more than two decades. “We certainly want to be alert to any irregularities.”
Loven believes Minnesota is one of 27 states for high voter turnout.
“It is intended to assure the public that if there are any irregularities, the DOJ is prepared to investigate them to ensure no federal election laws have been violated,” Loven added.
With election integrity and security top of mind for many, the safety of election workers has been a major concern – including increased security at polling places and additional protection at polling places. Bulletproof glass and panic buttons have been installed in some cities.
The FBI reports that more than 2,000 threats have been made against election workers in recent years.
New procedures have been put in place across the country for handling mail-in ballots, including having kits containing Narcan, the drug used to stop overdoses.
According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office: “Our federal law enforcement partners have shared that it is best practice to have Narcan/Naloxone on hand. That’s why we have a number of them in our office, and so do many local authorities.”
