Storm in Metro Vancouver: Power outages affecting 46,917 customers

Tens of thousands of BC Hydro customers are without power after a while powerful storm stormed the south coast of BC on Sunday, November 3.

Heavy rains and strong winds have caused localized flooding to snap tree limbs across the Lower Mainland.

As of Monday 10 a.m., BC Hydro reports 65 outages affecting 46,917 customers in the Lower Mainland and the Sunshine Coast, up from 22,487 in the 9am report.

Environment Canada also has one special weather statement for the Lower Mainland due to high winds and heavy rain. Storm conditions are expected to continue through Monday, with heavy rain easing around midday, but strong winds of 50 km/h with gusts up to 80 expected during the day and overnight.

Most of the major power outages are in Surrey and Langley, with others affecting customers in Vancouver, Delta, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, White Rock, Mission and West Vancouver.

Several outages are being investigated, but power has been cut in other areas due to trees falling over the wires.

Strong winds in Metro Vancouver weather forecast

Environment Canada Meteorologist Lisa Erven told VIA that parts of Metro Vancouver, including Surrey and Langley, are experiencing stronger winds. The department has issued a wind warning for areas with southerly winds of up to 90 km/h.

Strong winds can damage buildings, including shingles and windows. They can also throw loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Drivers can also encounter dangerous driving conditions on highways.

Thunderstorms are also possible on Tuesday morning and late afternoon.

Erven said the high winds are the “highlight” of the storm and will continue through the night. By Tuesday morning they should decrease to 40 km/h, with wind gusts up to 60.
