Did you know that Benedict Cumberbatch was once kidnapped? (Photo credit – Facebook)
Doctor Strange has a backstory that’s a little less “superhero origins” and a lot more “real nightmare.” Before his magic tricks and interdimensional escapes on the big screen, Benedict Cumberbatch had a terrifying confrontation with six armed men. And no, his Levitation Cloak wasn’t there to save him.
Flashback to 2004, South Africa: Cumberbatch was in the middle of filming To the Ends of the Earth and decided to go out with some co-stars to learn to dive. The journey itself? That’s probably great. The way back? Not so much. Their car tire burst on a remote road. And as they tried to fix it, a group of men emerged, weapons in hand. They forced Cumberbatch and his friends back into the car, where the actor faced a real-life horror plot that would leave everyone shocked. “We stopped and out of the bush these guys came and threw us back in the car,” he said.
One minute he’s on his way back to the set; the next moment he’s tied up – with his shoelaces no less – and shoved into the trunk. The situation became grim. He didn’t even turn to see the gun, but he knew it was there. “There was evidence of a gun, but I didn’t turn around to see it,” he alluded. For more than two hours they were at the mercy of these men, offering their belongings in the hope that they would be released.
Ultimately, the kidnappers made off with cash, cards and whatever they could get their hands on. Benedict and his friends? They had to seek help, bruised but alive. The experience was a turning point for him, which he rarely talks about. “I was lucky to get out of there,” he admitted. Most of all, he walked away with a whole new perspective on life. His big takeaway? A need to ‘live a life that is less than ordinary’.
Years later, it is easy to see that ‘life less than ordinary’. Cumberbatch may not have superpowers off-screen, but his career developed in a way that rivaled any Marvel storyline. From the role of Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock to embodying Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, he pursues roles that keep his feet firmly off the beaten path. And it all came full circle when, twelve years after that wild night, he took on the role of Doctor Strange, a hero whose skills come in handy when things get tough.
Now fans see him as a fearless, dimension-hopping wizard in the Marvel Universe. But knowing he has faced real danger adds a twist to his on-screen courage. Whether it’s casting spells, fighting intergalactic baddies, or voicing a dragon, Cumberbatch knows a thing or two about taking risks. Behind the cape and the incantations, it’s clear that a man has faced his demons – and emerged victorious.
