A civil society group, The Osun Masterminds, TOM, has accused the Osun State Government of doing nothing to make life easier for residents of the state.
The group made the accusation on Thursday during the State of the State press conference of its Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli in Osogbo.
He accused the Osun State Government of building flyovers and discussing nonsense instead of pursuing accelerated human development policies.
Prof. Oyedokun-Alli maintained that TOM had spoken out extensively on the country’s past biting hardships and lamented that there is no reprieve in sight as fuel prices and the cost of living continued to rise, leaving the people wallowing in poverty.
He called on the federal and state governments to intensify efforts to free the masses from the shackles of poverty.
In his words: “We have spoken extensively in the past about the biting hardships in Nigeria, but it seems there is no reprieve in sight.
“While fuel prices continue to rise, the cost of living increases and people continue to wallow in poverty.
“It is deeply disturbing that while the federal government is not doing much to alleviate the suffering of the people, state governments, which now deserve higher federal allocations, are also doing nothing to make life easier for their people.
“In Osun here, instead of pursuing accelerated human development policies, we are busy building flyovers and discussing nonsense.
“The people of Nigeria and Osun deserve to have a better life than the current hardships they are facing. Our people deserve to be happy and live in a society where their dreams and ambitions can thrive.
“We once again call on the Federal Government and the Osun State Government to urgently intensify efforts to liberate the masses from the shackles of poverty. We must work quickly to eradicate hunger and create opportunities for our people to earn a legitimate livelihood.”
On the high cost of governance, the group also accused the federal government and politicians in the corridors of power of not showing enough care for the country’s citizens.
He said: “We are currently in awe of the cost of governance in Nigeria and the apparent careless attitude of people in the corridor of power.
“We appeal to every public office holder to become empathetic to the people by eliminating unnecessary expenditure often characterized by unnecessary and avoidable travel, especially in the offices of the President, Vice President and Governors of the states.
“Reducing the number of service vehicles is not the only way to reduce administrative costs.
“The political class cannot feed fat at the expense of popular hunger,” Oyedokun-Alli concluded.
