Dad and son find their neighbor trapped in a 30-foot-deep well

On Wednesday, a Maryland man who spent the night at the bottom of a well was saved thanks to neighbors who heard his pleas for help.

The rescued man, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries after falling 30 feet into a well in Catonsville, the Baltimore County Fire Department said on Facebook.

Neighbor Wesley Straffin told local news station WBAL that he went outside to get his dogs from the yard when he “heard some guy screaming for help.”

Straffin went to get his father, Matt Straffin, to help him figure out what to do.

“We started shouting ‘hello, hello’ because we couldn’t tell where it was coming from,” Matt Straffin told WBAL. “And he started responding. He said, “Help, help.” Hi.’ And it turns out that it was our neighbor right behind us who fell into the well.”

Neighbors called 911 and in the meantime managed to get the trapped man some water.

Fire Department spokesman Travis Francis told People magazine that the man fell into the well the previous afternoon. From the well, the man said he saw it getting dark outside and then watched the sunrise the next day.

“Then he realized the day had come to seek help,” Francis said.

Matt Straffin told WBAL he suspects the man didn’t even know the well was there. The news footage of the scene shows no signs that would indicate the presence of a well.

“It looked like the ground had caved in,” Straffin said. “It was a hole about two and a half feet wide.”
