A mum claims her baby almost died when the washing machine exploded, leaving him dripping blood with a piece of his finger ‘dangling’. Amie McCarthy almost fell when she turned her head and saw her 15-month-old baby covered in blood.

The 29-year-old claims she had just filled the washing machine with half a load of dirty clothes when she heard a loud bang coming from the other room. The mum-of-five, who lives in Liverpool, claims she ran to the utility room and discovered the glass door of her washing machine had “exploded” with pieces of glass flying across the room.

Amie was horrified to discover that her one-year-old son, Brodie Davis, had been cut multiple times by glass, resulting in injuries to his eyes, neck, arms, hands and feet. Shocking photos show a bloodied child moments after he was allegedly hit by glass shards.

The stay-at-home mom admits she almost fainted when she noticed Brodie’s left index finger was “hanging by a thread” after the accident. Amie took the injured toddler to Alder Hey Hospital, where he underwent surgery to reattach his fingertip, which may require a skin graft in the future.

Amie says her washing machine was not overloaded or overheated and is calling on manufacturers to investigate the appliance to prevent further incidents.

She said: “I started tidying up as usual, put on the laundry, went into the kitchen and Brodie followed me into the kitchen. The washing machine is like a mini conservatory, separated from the kitchen. I was only a few years feet away, but around the corner.

“Normally he never looks at the washing machine. The washing machine only spun two or three times when I heard the glass shatter with great force. It looked like it was a window.

“I turned around and Brodie was on my left and he was covered in blood. It dripped on him. He screamed and cried. I thought he had a piece of glass stuck in his finger, but it was actually skin. And then I almost fainted. When I picked it up, I saw that the entire door was broken.

Brodie suffered injuries to his eye, neck, arms, hands and feet, as well as a significant cut to his left index finger that required immediate surgery to reattach the punctured skin. Amie said: “The skin had already started to die, so they tried to save it. The finger was re-implanted. We still don’t know whether another skin graft surgery will be necessary.

“The tip of his finger was hanging by a thread. It is unknown if the skin will continue to die and he will need a skin graft, where they will take the skin from his thigh. The consultant told us it could have been made much worse due to the size of the glass pieces. Imagine if it went into his neck.

“The tip of his finger will now be numb for the rest of his life.” Amie said her family had filed a complaint following the incident and are calling for an investigation into the “faulty” machine. Amie said: “The machine is only 16 months old – we haven’t had any problems in the past.

“My motherly instinct kicked in and I thought I didn’t want this to happen to anyone else. My grandmother bought me this machine, so she notified (the company) about the situation. They know what happened and I didn’t apologize or anything.

“There was nothing metal in the load, I didn’t overload it, I didn’t touch it and the baby didn’t touch it, it wasn’t too hot because it was a quick wash, so there must be something wrong with the glass.”

“I think it may be the washing machine’s fault. (The company) needs to look into this, it can’t be safe. You never think your washing machine will do this. I’m five months old – also old, and if the glass disappeared nearby, she wouldn’t stand a chance.

“They were huge shards of glass. I thought the washing machine would have safety glass, but it was massive pieces of glass. Brodie could have easily died that day. I told everyone with children not to go near the washing machine.

The manufacturer said it was very sorry for the distress caused by the incident and that one of its engineers would visit the facility to inspect the machine and would contact the customer once the report was received.
