Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish collapsed at his South Carolina concert and narrowly avoided falling completely off the stage.

Darius, 58, was singing his 2008 solo hit “Alright” at the annual Riverfront Revival concerts in his hometown of Charleston when he fell forward and apparently tripped while singing to the crowd.

Fortunately, he was helped by an employee who picked him back up and continued performing, joking, “I’m old as f**k.”

The singer later addressed the fall, as he told the audience according to the Daily Mail: “We’ve been doing this all summer. I didn’t fall even once. But I busted my ass in my hometown.

Hootie and the Blowfish formed in South Carolina in 1986 and released hits such as Let Her Cry, Hold My Hand, Only Wanna Be With You and Rollin’.

The multi-Grammy Award-winning band has sold over 25 million albums worldwide, and their debut album, Cracked Rear View, was one of the top 10 best-selling studio albums of all time.

Darius, who has become a solo country music icon, was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year.

The country music artist is heading to South Africa for shows on October 19 and 26 in Pretoria and Cape Town.

Darius, who was arrested on drug charges in February, released his memoir Life’s Too Short earlier this year after his children had flown the nest and became comfortable sharing honest details about his life.

“You don’t want your kids to go to high school hearing, ‘I read your dad’s book,’” he told People magazine earlier this year of his children Cary, 29, Dani, 23, and Jack ( 19 years old).

“I knew I would tell the truth, and the truth (might) come out sometimes. I just wanted them to be mature enough to handle it,” he said.

The singer talked about his journey from singing Al Green as a child to being a rock star in a band in the 1990s and then bursting onto the country music scene as a black artist.

He also wrote candidly about his absent father and several complicated meetings they had over the years, including how he asked his son to give him $50,000.

Darius’s older brother, Rucker, was in and out of prison as a child due to addiction problems. He later died after falling and hitting his head during an attack while he was “f***ed up”.

I always said that if I wrote a book, I would tell the truth. And I told the truth about him. It was just another thing you had to deal with, this trauma. It was hard to watch your older brother with all his potential turn into something like this. It was traumatic,” he told the newspaper.

The memoir also detailed Darius’ problems with substance abuse, as he admitted to being surprised that all four of his bandmates – he, Dean Felber, Mark Bryan and Jim Sonefeld – made it out of the ’90s in one piece.

He credited ex-wife Beth with saving his life by “putting his foot down” and giving her an ultimatum, which turned out to be a “great moment” in the star’s life.
