Mother says she is often mistaken for her daughter’s sister: ‘My mini-me’

A mother and daughter share how and why people think they are sisters.

California native Kelly Cantu, 40, and her daughter Madison, 20, claim they are often mistaken for sisters.

Kelly Cantu said she was only 20 years old when she had her daughter — and was excited to have her own “mini-me,” as Jam Press reported.

That wasn’t just wishful thinking, the outlet noted.

As the daughter grew, the similarities between the two began to become apparent.

Eventually, when young Madison turned 13 and mother Kelly was only 33, people started asking if they were two sisters.

“She was in high school when it started,” Kelly Cantu, a content creator, told What’s the Jam.

“It happened when I picked her up. I was constantly mistaken for her sister or another student,” she said.

“We both thought it was really funny.”

Madison Cantu said, “My friends and other classmates always asked if she was my sister when they first met my mother. And their parents always did the same!”

The duo said they haven’t stopped dating since. They say this not only happens in public, but also online.

Kelly Cantu said, “Every time we’re out and I call her ‘Baby Girl’ and someone finds out I’m her mom, people always say, ‘I thought you guys were sisters.’”

The mother said sometimes it gets embarrassing.

“When Madison was younger, I laughed,” she said. “But sometimes I get embarrassed. Especially when people start asking how old I was when I had her.”

However, the younger Cantu said she likes to hear it every now and then.

She said, “I think it’s funny, and I hope she does too.” good genetics will reflect on me. When people find out she is my parent and not my sister, they are always shocked.”

And they “usually make a comment about how she looks so young.”

She added: “I feel honored because she is such a beautiful woman. Everyone says it and I know it too. I hope I look as good when I’m 40!”

“I think it’s funny, and I hope her good genetics will rub off on me,” the younger Cantu said. “When people find out she’s my parent and not my sister, they’re always shocked.” (Jam-press)

The mother-daughter duo often goes out in matching colors, they said.

Kelly Cantu, who now lives in England, said: “I love matching… I’ve been trying to match colors or at least wear them. I actually just ordered matching Christmas jumpers and Christmas pajamas for us,” she added.

She also said, “Once I I dyed my hair dark to also be more like Madison.”

The couple said they appreciate the similarities.

Kelly Cantu said, “I love every time we hear that we look alike. My daughter, to me, is the most beautiful person in the world, so when someone thinks we look like that, it means a lot to me.”

Even their family and friends think the two are “virtually identical,” Jam Press noted.

Kelly Cantu said, “My mom always tells me she can’t get over how much we look alike and how we act. I think even more now… I would say my daughter and I are best friends and go everywhere together and behave much the same.”

People have said they find it “strange” that they are so close, the mother said.

But both women said it doesn’t matter to them because they feel like they are “each other’s best friends.”
