Heavy rain is expected across southern New England on Thursday, which will help alleviate the ongoing drought.
As it moves north toward New England on Thursday, an area of low pressure will develop, bringing enough lift and moisture to produce beneficial rain across the region.
The rain is likely to start Thursday morning and continue until the afternoon. A washout is likely.
Rainfall totals will likely be a half to an inch for most of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
Much of central and eastern Massachusetts is in severe drought, as is northern Rhode Island, including Lincoln, Woonsocket and Cumberland.
While the rain Thursday won’t come close to eliminating the drought, it will be a good first step in putting a dent in the drought.
The weather pattern is likely to become much more active in the second half of November, with additional rain chances likely.
Colder air masses are also expected as we approach Thanksgiving starting next weekend when highs will be in the 40s. It will likely feel even colder with gusty winds likely through most of the weekend.
