Truck drivers are angry after the Highway 301 road closure causes detours

HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) – A railroad crossing on Highway 301 in Hawthorne is undergoing maintenance, causing detours and backups. Now truck drivers are looking for alternative routes. This comes two days after construction began and two semi-trucks were in a wreck with a train near the site.

Truck driver Jerry Walker is one of hundreds of truckers who travel on Highway 301, and he says the detours are affecting his livelihood.

“I drive this road every day, so I’m a living witness to tell you. I drive this road, this is the only way I can make a living,” says Walker.

Walker continues, “It’s hard for the semi truck drivers to try to get into tight spaces and turn our trucks and find our way when a lot of these guys come from all over the state to semi truck and they don’t know where they have to go.”

Truck driver Robert Armer says the detour added an hour to his journey and cost him time and money.

The Florida Department of Transportation estimates construction should be completed by Thursday.
