The residents of a community can make or break your experience in an area, whether they are unwelcoming or quick to offer a helping hand.

A survey ranking the most “kind-hearted and helpful” residents in the United States shows that a location in Delaware might not be what you expect.

LuvLink, a company focused on products that support long-distance relationships, surveyed 3,000 travelers to find out which US locations have the most kind-hearted and helpful locals. The data has been compiled into a list of the top 150 places known for their hospitality and real human connection.”

Of the 150 places listed, Delaware’s contribution comes with Wilmington at number 149.

While not a quiet suburb or the laid-back beach towns you normally think of when you think of hospitality in the First State, Wilmington earns its place among the other locations mentioned. LuvLink calls Wilmington residents known for “their approachable and down-to-earth attitude,” which reflects the mix of big city energy and small town charm.

Travelers surveyed said Wilmington locals often help others navigate the city’s food and arts scenes, offering tips on the hottest new restaurants and exhibits worth getting tickets for. Those who have visited the city add that city residents, whether downtown, on the riverfront or somewhere in between, are enthusiastic about their area and friendly to those who want to maximize their time in transit.

When travelers surveyed were asked about the most memorable act of kindness they experienced in Delaware, 42% said locals offered them directions or assistance, and 25% said a local helped them during an unexpected situation or emergency.

In total, 17% of respondents said they had been invited to a local event or meeting, and 16% were offered a ride or personally escorted by a local resident. Illustrating how important hospitality is when booking a trip, the survey shows that 52% of respondents take it into account when planning, and that 85% of travelers return to a destination specifically because of the friendliness shown and friendships shown occurred during a previous visit.

  • Jackson, Mississippi, at number 2
  • Murfreesboro, Tennessee, at No. 3
  • Port St. Lucie, Florida, at number 4
  • Richmond, Virginia, at number 5
  • Madison, Wisconsin, at number 6
  • Coral Springs, Florida, at number 7
  • Charleston, South Carolina, at number 8
  • Norfolk, Virginia, at number 9
  • Scottsdale, Arizona, at number 10
