After the incident off the French town of Wissant, 65 people were rescued, but “an unconscious child was found and unfortunately he was pronounced dead,” maritime authorities said.
The latest sinking brings the number of migrants who have died this year while trying to cross the English Channel to at least 52, a record since 2018.
In early September, 12 migrants, including six children, died while trying to cross the English Channel. A month later, a two-year-old boy and three adults died after overloaded boats ran into trouble during two separate attempts.
According to government data, the number of migrants arriving by boat in the UK has averaged 53 people this year, compared with 13 in 2020. More than 26,000 migrants have arrived on UK shores since January 1, according to UK Home Office data.
Earlier this week it was revealed that more than 62,000 migrants could be granted asylum in the UK as part of efforts to clear the backlog of cases. The number of pending asylum applications is expected to reach 118,063 in January, says the Refugee Council. According to the charity, as many as 62,801 of them could be considered refugees in the UK.
Its calculations were based on grant rates applied in the 12 months leading up to the UK’s July general election, with the Refugee Council applying them to asylum seekers of different nationalities to arrive at a “working assumption” of this amount in January.
