Sanjiv Khanna, the nominee for Chief Justice of Indiain an emotional speech on Friday, CJI DY praised Chandrachud and said that “when a towering tree of justice steps back, the wind moves differently.”
Highlighting the profound impact of outgoing Chief Justice Chandrachud, Justice Khanna said, “The forest will never be quite the same again.”
“From Monday we will feel the change deeply; a void will resonate through the sandstone pillars of this court, a silent echo in the hearts of the members of the bar and bench alike,” he added.
At a farewell event for CJIorganized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Khanna underlined Chandrachud’s qualities as a scholar and lawyer and said he is “calm and composed both in court and in life.”
“Thirty-eight constitutional rulings, including two just delivered today. This is a record that will remain unbroken,” the CJI nominee said.
During his address, Attorney General R. Venkatramani spoke about Chief Justice Chandrachud’s approach in humanizing the judiciary, noting how the Supreme Court under his leadership took into account women clerks working from home, provided crèches and took steps that demonstrated compassionate understanding. of the needs of the workforce. These small but meaningful gestures, he said, would remain in the court’s legacy.
In a heartfelt tribute, Senior Advocate and SCBA President Kapil Sibal commended the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, for his leadership and willingness to take up critical issues before the country’s highest court. Sibal emphasized that while there may be disagreements, respect for Chandrachud’s openness and dedication remains paramount.
“We may not agree with you; there is no need to agree but we must salute you for being willing to hear these issues,” Sibal said, acknowledging the challenges that CJI Chandrachud took up that others may have been hesitant to tackle.
Looking back on Chandrachud’s work, Sibal noted that his contributions would be remembered not only for what he achieved but also for his approach to sensitive matters. “You will be remembered for what you did and what you didn’t do,” he added.
CJI Chandrachud began his term on November 8, 2022, succeeding Uday Umesh Lalit, who served as the 49th CJI from August 27, 2022 to November 8, 2022.
