Man in St. Paul was taken to hospital in critical condition early Thursday morning after firefighters found him unconscious while searching his home following a garage fire.

What we know

Fire Department St. Paul (SPFD) reported that the indecent incident occurred just before 3 a.m. at 10 Nelson Street in the Battle Creek neighborhood. Fire brigades were dispatched to the scene and found thick smoke and flames coming from the garage adjacent to the house.

Firefighters said the people inside the home evacuated safely and told crews there was no one else inside. However, during a search of the house, firefighters found an unconscious man in the basement.

The man was evacuated from the house and the emergency medical team took life-saving measures. SPFD said he was transported to the hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

Initial investigations indicate the fire was contained to the garage and was quickly extinguished, but black smoke was billowing through the house. Photos provided by SPFD show smoke damage outside the home and a soot-covered vehicle parked in the garage.
