Authorities begin investigation as suspected thieves raid the cemetery and steal crosses

Morogoro- Police in the eastern part of Tanzania investigate a bizarre incident in which an unknown group entered a cemetery and destroyed graves.

The raid took place at Kola cemetery, where the suspects made off with crosses.

Mwananchi reports that the actions of the unidentified people prevented relatives of the deceased from identifying the graves; some were forced to purchase new crosses so that the resting places of their loved ones remained recognizable.

What was the motive behind theft at the Tanzanian cemetery?

According to sources, the thieves took the metal bars that reinforced the concrete crosses and sold them to scrap dealers.

Authorities investigating the incident are devising mechanisms to stop the vandalism and theft at the cemetery.

Morogoro senior administrator Emanuel Mkongo said floodlights would be installed at the cemetery.

Other measures being considered include a police base nearby to patrol the site and a permanent fence around it.

“I will meet with my experts to discuss and see together how we can put an end to the actions that are repeating from time to time. Here we are looking at three ways, one is to see the possibility of installing lights in those cemeteries, and the second way is to work with the police to conduct regular patrols in the vicinity of the cemeteries,” said Mkongo .

How a Malawian man with grave crosses ended up in police custody

The dealers reported the man, a Malawian, to authorities and said they found it unusual for one person to be in possession of so many grave crosses.

They suspected that the man then stole the crosses people laid their loved ones to rest on the outskirts of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.

Police confirmed he was arrested and locked up behind bars; State law enforcement officials urged the public to visit the cemetery and check whether the burial sites of their deceased loved ones were intact.

They were asked to report it to the police if they found anything unusual at the sites.
