In a 1991 interview with Stardust, he said that his then girlfriend Gauri, along with his sister, uncle and aunt, were the “most important people” in his life. He also said he couldn’t understand why actors claimed to sacrifice love for their careers.
“I have a personal life. I have friends, a girlfriend, uncle, aunt, sister. And they are the most important people in my life,” he said. Recalling an interview in the same magazine in which an actor talked about breaking up with his girlfriend so he could focus on his career. “Love ’em and leave ’em, he said Come on man, you’re talking like you’re an asshole, man. And then making it public, I mean, flaunting the fact that you screw them and leave them, how rude can you be? the moments you shared with the woman?” he said.
Shah Rukh Khan said he didn’t know why you have to choose between a successful career and a personal life. He said he didn’t understand the idea of sacrificing relationships for professional success. He said, “And I really don’t understand what it’s like to sacrifice this for my career and that for my career. I mean, why can’t you have both? Why are you making excuses for your neglect towards your family, wife or girlfriend? And even if you have neglected your personal life for your professional life, what makes you so proud of it? You have no right to hurt people who love you, and you speak about it as if you were doing the right thing. How ridiculous.”
At that time, Shah Rukh Khan had not yet started his film career and he was afraid of losing himself in the glitter of the film industry. He pointed out that many actors focus too much on themselves and forget about others. He added, “The fact is, most of these actors are too preoccupied with themselves to even think about anyone else. They are so caught up in themselves – and it is very easy to get carried away in this profession – that they have no time and space for anyone else. It’s called narcissism. Most people here are like that. Their makeup room is their world and the flatterers are their family. They are so cut off from reality. They lose themselves to this world. I wish that never happened to me. And if that happens, I will be very sad.”
