WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Saturday, November 2 marks the start of the general deer hunting season in Central Texas.
Hunters should get to bed early tonight to get an early start to this year’s whitetail deer hunting season, and experts say the outlook is promising.
“Here in McLennan County we are very excited and hopeful for this season,” said McLennan County Game Warden Dustin Delgado. “The spring rains have allowed the deer in our area to live and thrive in abundance.”
Before you pack up and head out, local game wardens recommend making sure you have everything you need, and they don’t just mean your gear.
“Check your hunting license, make sure it is valid and that you have the correct hunting license. Those are definitely things we’re going to check,” Delgado said.
Delgado also advises hunters to make sure you have completed the necessary hunter training.
“The hunter registration requirement, hunter education is required for anyone born on or before 1971,” Delgado said. “So ultimately they have to follow that course in order to hunt legally.”
If you don’t have access to private land, there are opportunities on public hunting areas, but you must obtain your permits in advance.
“For hunting opportunities, we encourage you to contact your local Corps of Engineers office for more information about those areas,” Delgado said.
Rules can change from year to year. That’s why game wardens have created a one-stop vessel tool to get regulatory information.
“We definitely encourage them to check out our Texas Outdoor Manual,” Delgado said. “It has our hunting, fishing and water safety regulations, so check that carefully and make sure you know the rules for the hunting season.”
The general white-tailed deer season opens on November 2 and runs until January 5.
