The Democrats’ campaign strategy to use Elon Musk’s X against Trump

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is using staff to discredit fact-checking accounts supporting Kamala Harris on X, according to screenshots reportedly leaked from a Discord server.

It is alleged that the DNC team is using its activists’ social media platforms in a shadow war against Donald Trump on a platform owned by one of his most influential supporters.

Reportedly leaked screenshots from a Discord server allegedly used by DNC staff appear to show a coordinated effort to discredit “community notes” on the platform formerly known as Twitter, which target accounts that support Mrs Harris.

Community Notes is a feature on X that allows users to monitor content on the platform and give video clips more context.

Other users can mark the comments as “helpful” or “not helpful”. Community notes marked as “helpful” are more likely to remain below the original post and be seen by other users.

Screenshots published by The Federalist, a conservative online magazine, appear to reveal the DNC’s strategy on the owner, Elon Musk.

Leakage from online group

The magazine said the apparent leak came from an online group used by DNC staff and activists.

In one reported message, Timothy Durigan, an official with the DNC, appeared to send a link to a message from @‌KamalaHQ, Ms. Harris’s official “quick response” account.

The post, a video of Trump describing Democrats as “dangerous,” had received a community note suggesting the former president was referring to a specific State Department whistleblower.

According to the post, Mr Durigan asked: “Can people rate comments about this as ‘not helpful’?”

In another post, another alleged Democratic staffer posted a link to a negative community note on an X-post from @‌RNCResearch, an official GOP account.

Mr Durigan is said to have replied: “Just rated as useful.”

Fierce online battle

The alleged strategy comes amid a fierce online battle between Trump supporters and Ms Harris, which has played out extensively on X during the 2024 election cycle.

Videos posted by @‌RNCResearch were a major driver of stories about Joe Biden’s mental state before he dropped out of the presidential racethereby amplifying his blunders and slips on the world stage.

X’s terms of service do not permit users to engage in “platform manipulation,” which is defined as using the site “in a manner intended to artificially enhance or suppress information, or engage in behavior that manipulates or distorts people’s experience on

Election content on X has become even more widespread since Mr. Musk, the company’s owner and CEO, endorsed Trump on July 13.

The billionaire messages about Trump several times a day, and appeared next to him on stage at several events in the final weeks of the campaign.

Musk’s posts are especially popular on X, directing users to a network of Trump-supporting accounts on his platform.

To fight back, the Discord screenshots suggest Ms Harris’ team is spreading positive messages through a separate app, Reach, and relaying messages that are echoed by her supporters online.

Earlier this month, a report from BetMGM Sportsbook Canada found that Trump has an advantage over Ms. Harris on X. His posts are receiving more likes and reposts, and he gained more followers in the month of September.

Much of the content about Trump is reposted from his own media platform, Truth Social, which he has long used to post his thoughts on the news and his campaign.

On August 24, Trump returned to X after more than two years of absence. He was banned in January 2021before Mr. Musk owned the platform, and returned to post his mugshot after being booked in the Georgia election interference lawsuit.

The DNC was contacted for comment.
