Tragedy in Kos: Pediatrician recalls heartbreaking moments after migrant ship disaster: “I can still see the children’s faces”

Dramatic moments took place on Tuesday evening when two children who died in the disaster of a migrant ship arrived at the island’s hospital on Tuesday evening. In addition to children, two women also lost their lives, said a hospital pediatrician.

“These are very unpleasant things. We have to be here to help. They were two dead children, I still see them in front of me,” she told vimatisko.gr.

Coast Guard Statement

Yesterday in the late hours of LS-EL.AKT. The patrol boat (PPA), which was conducting a scheduled patrol, was informed that a suspicious vessel, without navigation lights, was moving at high speed towards the coast in the area of ​​Agios Fokas n. Kos.

VTS observed a wind powered motorboat (T/X) with sufficient passengers and used light and sound signals, to which the motorboat pilot did not comply.

Instead, it made violent and dangerous high-speed maneuvers that resulted in the loss of control and enough people at sea, and disabling the ship.

Two (02) PPS crew members went overboard to rescue people, and the LS-ELACT Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center was notified.

A total of ten (10) people were recovered from the sea, of which four (2 women and 2 children) were unconscious. They were immediately given first aid with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and three (03) more ships and one (01) private boat were dispatched to assist.

Four unconscious people were immediately taken to the port of Kos, where they were handed over to an ambulance crew and evacuated to Kos General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead. Twenty-one (21) people were safely transferred from the T/X boat to the patrol boat LS-EΛ.AKT.

A total of twenty-seven (27) rescued persons were transferred to the port of Kos and handed over to the port authorities. The five children and the infant were taken as a precaution to the Kos General Hospital, where they were examined and found to be in good health. Twenty-six foreign nationals (14 men, 4 women and 8 minors) were transferred by Greek police officers to the reception and identification center (KYT) in Kos.

According to the statements of the rescued people, no missing persons were reported and the total number of passengers was thirty foreigners and their traffickers, and the search was continued by two (02) PPAs. The Port of Kos Authority, which is conducting a preliminary investigation, has seized the transport boat.
