Kim Jong Un said the launch of a long-range ICBM showed how North Korea would respond to its enemies
North Korea has launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time in a year to warn the US.
According to NPR North Korea tested an ICBM on Thursday, October 31, 2024, to demonstrate its potential progress and ability to launch long-range nuclear strikes against the US mainland.
According to the Defense Ministry, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was present at the test site and called the launch “an appropriate military action” that shows how the country will respond to the moves of its enemies that endanger the North’s security to take.
North Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed the missile launch in a statement, hours after neighboring South Korea noticed a new and more powerful weapon capable of targeting the US mainland had been fired.
The ministry stated that Kim promised: “I affirm that the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) will never change its line of strengthening its nuclear forces.”
Moreover, the US, South Korea and Japan also identified the weapon as an ICBM and condemned the launch amid rising tensions.
Yang Uk, an expert at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in South Korea, noted: “North Korea probably could have thought that its rivals could look down on the country after giving away so many military resources to Russia. The launch may have been intended as a demonstration to show what it is capable of, regardless of troop deployments or other movements.”
Note that the launch of the new missile came after the US warned that North Korea had sent its troops to Russia to join forces in the war against Ukraine.
